Matt Paterson leaves Oxford for Welling

Oxford City have tonight announced that star striker Matt Paterson has left the club to join fellow National League South side Welling United.

In his time at the club, Matt returned a goal average of better than a goal every two matches as he struck 34 times in 62 appearances. The most memorable of these came in the FA Cup as he scored the only goal of the game in the First Round to not only see City into the Second Round for the first time in 48 years, but also the club’s first ever victory over Football League opposition. He also put the Hoops on the brink of a first ever appearance in the Third-Round draw with an equaliser against Notts County in the Second Round.

City boss Mark Jones knows how tough a decision it was to let the striker leave: “We thank Matt sincerely for everything he’s done for us. He’s been a very good player with his goalscoring and contribution to the team.

The 28 year old Scot can count Aldershot, Gosport Borough, Havant & Waterlooville and Burton Albion among his former sides.

This signing clearly shows that the Wings mean business this year as they look to build on an impressive start to the season. He will compete for a place in the Welling side with the likes of Danny Mills, Adam Coombes and Bradley Goldberg among others.
