Impressive Welling see off Dartford

In front of a Bumper Boxing Day crowd of nearly 2000, Welling United won the first of a double header of Christmas encounters with local rivals Dartford. It was a dominant and professional display that saw them run out 2-0 victors, the perfect tonic for The Wings after a run of 3 tough away games.

Welling were quick out the blocks and a dangerous cross from McCallum almost found Danny Mills but former Welling Loan keeper Bailey Vose reacted quickest to snap out the cross.

A free kick into the area was met by Josh Hill, the ball dropped to Mills, but he was unable to get enough purchase on the ball and Vose made the save.

A corner into the box again was not dealt with by The Darts and Josh Hill was first to react but again Vose made the save.

Midway through the first half, Danny Mills produced a great cross for L’Ghoul and the Frenchman rose well but directed his header wide. The game then boiled over Wynter making a crude challenge on Mills, Tom Bonner smashing the loose ball against the prostate Mills which earned him a yellow card on another day it may have been red. This seemed to fire Welling up and they deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute. A deep corner from Nassim L’Ghoul was met by Josh Hill and his header went in via the post, as Welling went in ahead at the break.

Into the 2nd half and Welling missed a golden opportunity to double their lead within a minute of the restart. Bradley Goldberg fed Mills who brilliantly turned his man but dragged his effort wide with just Vose to beat.

The lively Bradley Goldberg then brought a smart save out of Vose as Welling continued to dominate. L’Ghoul a constant thorn in the side of The Darts let rip from 25 yards but his effort just went wide.

Dartford who had been mere spectators to much of Welling’s attacking play made subs in the hope of sparking there play and they had there first shot of the game in the 57th minute, Lee Noble resulted to a long range effort that never troubled Wilks.

Welling continued to pour forward and the ball made its way out to Gavin McCallum but he slashed his effort wide when well placed.

Dartford sensing they perhaps should not even still be in the game began to throw caution to the wind and came into the game more, Sub Corker hitting a shot just wide.

However with the game entering its final quarter Welling somehow passed up two great chances. Bradley Goldberg saw the ball squeezed through to him but his effort hit the post, perhaps via a touch from Vose. In the same passage of play, a cross was met by Danny Mills but he headed wide when he should have scored.

But with seven minutes remaining Welling did get the 2nd. Superb trickery from Kissock saw him get to the byline before crossing. Keeper Bailey Vose could only push the ball into the path of Danny Mills who smashed home the loose ball, to the delight of the massive Welling following.

Welling were given a let off when Ben Greenhalgh broke behind the Wings defence but could only drag his shot wide. Into time added on Corker then hit a powerful low effort against the post, but it was to little to late for The Darts as Welling ran out deserved winners. The Wings only have a few days to reflect on the win as they face a tough game against Concord Rangers at Park View Road on Saturday. Before the return match with Dartford on New Years Day.
