Wingate & Finchley chairman summarises their season

The Wingate & Finchley Chairman Aron Sharpe has taken time to round-up the clubs’ season and the strange ending to it.

“Having had some time to reflect on these unprecedented circumstances, I feel now is the appropriate time to communicate with our faithful supporters, and everyone associated with Wingate & Finchley Football Club.

First and foremost, I hope you and your families are keeping safe and healthy. While everyone recognises that our health and supporting the NHS at these difficult times is the priority, I, like many, am certainly missing football.

Our season is now over. Despite our League position, our form in 2020 was ever-improving and it’s a shame we didn’t get the opportunity to continue this in the remaining fixtures. We were all looking forward to last Saturday for our local derby v Enfield Town and our annual presentation day for all teams from U7’s through to the First Team.

We are fortunate that we are not wholly reliant on matchday and bar revenue to keep the club sustainable, so we have worked closely with our licensees to ensure a positive solution for all in this period of uncertainty. It is impossible to know when we will see you all at Summers Lane next, but whatever the case we are planning carefully to ensure that we are ready and prepared for when football can resume.

We are working hard to bring in the new players we have identified, and look forward to other players in our squad returning from long term injury. There will also be a development squad introduced for the new season to provide a pathway for our promising Under 18’s squad and providing a strong link with our first team for young talented footballers who are not quite ready for Step 3 football. We expect to announce full details soon once our League application is ratified.

There have been various views on the decision to void the Leagues at our level and below. Unfortunately, there is no fair system. However, in my role as FA Councillor I can only stress the many factors that had to be considered. Being privileged to see the workings at each level, I believe that time will show that the correct decision has been made, however harsh that feels to some clubs right now.

With some pre-season games already in place and pitch renovations underway, we hope to see you all again very soon. In the meantime, please stay safe and well.”
