Sheppey United Mourns the Passing of Manager Ernie Batten

Sheppey United has announced the passing of their beloved manager and club director, Ernie Batten, at the age of 67.

Batten played an instrumental role in the club’s resurgence, leaving behind an immeasurable legacy.

In a heartfelt statement, the club paid tribute:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernie Batten—Sheppey’s greatest football manager and one of the club’s most celebrated players.

“His vision and passion brought Sheppey United back to the heart of the community, taking the club to heights that Island football fans could only dream of: Two promotions, six cup finals, four domestic trophies, and an unforgettable FA Cup run. Under his leadership, Sheppey made history by reaching the FA Cup first round for the first time in our 130-year history, earning national recognition and a worldwide TV audience.

“You made our dreams come true, Ernie. Your legacy will live on forever. Goodnight, Gaffer.”

Batten guided Sheppey to the FA Cup first round in November 2023, where they faced Walsall in a televised home fixture at Holm Park, ultimately falling 4-1.

As a player, Batten was a prolific striker for Hastings United and Chelmsford City, also featuring for Gravesend & Northfleet.

His contributions to Sheppey United and the footballing community will never be forgotten.
